Dunes Lines

This poem was inspired by Ron Engel's excellent natural and social history of the Indiana Dunes, Sacred Sands. It was used in The Dunes Project, a performance piece produced and directed by my wife, Melli Hoppe, for her group Susurrus and presented at Butler University.

Shortest Days

Free meter haiku in the manner of Ippekiro. Observation and juxtaposition count more than syllables. These were written over the course of a January in St. Paul, Minnesota during the mid-1970s. I lived in a carriage house behind a great old robber baron mansion. Afternoons spent playing pool on an ocean-size Tiffany table. It was a Chekhovian scene.
